Saudi Arabia is one of the most popular countries in the world for experienced teachers to seek employment. There are a number of reasons why so many teachers choose to teach in Saudi Arabia. It is centrally located in the Arab world, which makes travelling to other countries in the Middle East and Asia very easy. Scuba diving and desert trekking are popular activities for the more adventurous spirits, and there are a number of shopping malls and western eateries in the main cities for those who seek the comforts of the west.

Saudi Arabia also offers some of the most attractive employment packages available in international teaching. There are relatively high tax-free salaries, and teacher contracts usually include housing, medical insurance and annual return flights to the teacher’s home country. When you combine those benefits with a relatively low cost of living (although increasing), it is no wonder why so many international teachers choose to teach in Saudi Arabia.

However, living in Saudi Arabia can be challenging for those who arrive unprepared and uninformed. There are major social differences between life in Saudi Arabia and what many people are used to in the west, such as a ban on alcohol and gender separation in public places. Just like living in any foreign country, there will always be differences in attitude, outlook, and lifestyle, so it’s advisable to learn as much as possible about the country you are thinking about teaching in before you accept your job offer.
